Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Located in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation, Mazzei is a highly prestigious winery boasting a family tradition spanning nearly 600 years and 24 generations. This Super Tuscan, first produced in 1981, is a blend of mostly Sangiovese, with approximately one-fifth of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the Concerto vineyard, located approximately 350 meters above sea level in Fonterutoli, in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti. Here, the 19-year-old vines are planted in soils rich in limestone, alberese, and galestro. After the harvest, which was carried out in two separate phases for the Cabernet and Sangiovese, fermentation takes place separately at a controlled temperature, and the wines then rest in French oak for 18 months before blending and further aging in concrete. In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, brilliant ruby color. Its aromatic profile is rich and intense, with notes of dark cherries and wild berries, black pepper, and licorice. On the palate, it is juicy and robust, with dense, smooth tannins and a distinctive, refreshing acidity. It is vigorous and elegant, balanced and concentrated, with a long finish that evokes toasted and spicy notes. It pairs perfectly with grilled red meat and beef goulash.
